Five minutes with Nelly Furtado
Known for her eclectic taste and style, this Canadian folk/hip-hop/R&B/pop singer is one talented lady. Her latest album Loose presents a whole new side of Nelly ... and we like it! Throw in some big beats and cheeky raps and it is definitely one to get in your mix this year. In Oz to launch this puppy, we tracked her down and got her to spill her innermost secrets!

The quickies: Fave place? São Miguel, Azores, Portugal. Song? 'Live Forever' by Oasis. Holiday destination? Tuscany, Italy. Bad habit? Throwing clothes on the floor. Drink? Green tea. Celebrity? Michael Moore. Accessory? Earrings. TV show? Canadian Idol. Colour? Blue. Supermodel? Gisele Bündchen. Pastime? Reading. Pet? Cat. Movie? The English Patient. Motto? It can always be better…
The biggies: C: What age did you get into the biz? 17.
C: What was your 'big break'? Performing an original song at a talent show in Toronto where I met my manager and the producers of my first album.
C: Career highlight so far? Opening for U2 in Dublin, Ireland, winning a Grammy and recording my third album Loose in Miami.
C: Craziest thing a fan has ever done? One fan climbed a building to get to my second floor dressing room window in Mexico to have a photo taken with me.
C: What are the perks of being a celeb? Free clothes, meeting lots of good-looking people all the time and having an outlet.
C: Who inspires you? My grandmother because she's 92, lives alone, does her own cleaning, cooking and gardening, and lives in the moment.
C: Are there days where the whole experience is surreal? Like when fans recognise you on the street? Yeah, sometimes. I was at the airport recently and a girl recognised me as the elevator door was closing and screamed. A little bit strange, but overall it's nice because fans are that excited to see me and about my music.
C: So are there days that you just think, 'What have I done?' It's definitely an odd career choice because of the time and energy it demands. It's 24/7 and you have to be on your best behaviour a lot of the time.
C: Where will you be in ten years? I hope to have two more children and I hope to maybe be writing some type of book or be acting in some movie or producing something artistic of some kind.
C: Finally, any advice to other aspiring performers? Learn how to play an instrument and learn how to write your own songs and surround yourself with all kinds of musicians from all genres.
The new album: C: Your new album Loose has a different feel to it than your previous albums. What inspired you to change your style? I wanted it to reflect my urban, R&B and trip-hop influences. Also [legendary hip-hop producer] Timbaland and I connected five years ago and I really wanted to work with him again. I like evolving with each album. It keeps people interested and keeps me interested as well. I usually sing R&B songs when I'm at home. It's my favourite style of music and most comfortable to sing and promote.
C: Did you enjoy working with Timbaland? Tell us a bit about it. Tim is great to work with. He's now working with his prodigy Nate "Danja" Hills and the three of us have really good chemistry in the studio. When I work with Tim, I feel like he's throwing me a fastball and I have to hit a home run all the time. He brings out this powerful, mysterious side of me that I like. I think we will make music for a long, long time.
C: Rumour has it he also helped with your dance moves! Yeah, Timbaland is a great dancer. He has a lot of rhythm. He becomes the beat. One time he saw me dancing off-beat and stopped the beat right away. It ruined the vibe for him. I took dance lessons after that!
C: You're touring North America and Japan over the next few months are you planning to tour Australia in the near future? Yup. I am doing a promo tour in Australia as we speak but am hoping to come back for the Loose tour. I look forward to it!
Loose is in stores NOW!
